FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Why a girls’ school?
This is a popular question, and understandably so. In a changing educational landscape where gender difference is fast diminishing, it is easy to assume that an all girls’ school might be an anachronism. A closer look would indicate otherwise. Reputable all girls’ schools, are seriously sought after by parents in search of a fine education for their daughters. A Harvard University study recently established that girls from age 10 to 16 think, interact, display leadership qualities and make decisions in a way that is unique, psychologically and developmentally, compared to boys. Young women develop best in an environment that empowers them, encourages their intellectual curiosity, fosters participation in the learning process, and offers a sense of community and connectedness.
What are the benefits of sending my child to an all girls’ school?
Educationists in the United Kingdom recently found that girls at the secondary school age do better in an all girls’ school. Girls at that age are more studious and tend to focus better in a same gender environment. Apart from academic development, a same gender boarding school can offer a wide range of activities in the fine arts that can help them develop their personalities, self-confidence, poise and give them a ‘finishing touch’. There are many opportunities for leadership in girls’ schools where their voices are heard and their ideas are taken seriously. Research shows conclusively that girls who attend single sex schools, especially boarding schools, show better academic performance, perform better at standardized tests, take more advanced mathematics and science courses, are more likely to be accepted by the best universities, and proportionately earn more doctorate degrees and fill high-level employment positions than do their co-educated peers.
How can an all-girls’ school prepare my daughter for the real world?
All-girls' schools prepare girls to succeed in the real world. They are challenged and nurtured by learning through experiences in a setting where they can take risks without fear of the embarrassment they might feel in a mixed gender classroom. Girls' successes are celebrated by the school community, which cultivates higher potentials. Their classes are conducted through an atmosphere of cooperative discovery, which is a style of learning often preferred by girls. Like plants in a greenhouse where the elements are perfectly suited for growth, they develop deep strong roots that enable them to blossom in the real world.
How can the boarding experience contribute to the quality of my daughter’s education?
Boarding schools are exceptional in the sense that a boarding school is an education in and of itself. It is a great fusion of tradition and innovative learning environment. By staying in a boarding school, students learn about discipline, independence, confidence and character, which are life lessons. Also, as part of a community, girls learn values such as tolerance, patience, empathy, humility and proper etiquette. This will also be a good experience for them before they go overseas when they enter University.
What about ‘pastoral’ care?
The principal, Housemistress, teachers and tutors, together, work closely to provide the students with the best possible supervision and attention. Teachers act ‘in loco parentis’ (in place of parents) and are readily available for academic and personal guidance. Fellow students, at the same time, provide a social environment that form strong bonds of friendship.
